한미장애인협회(KADPA)는 1991년 미국 메릴랜드주 볼티모어 지역에서 장애 자녀를 둔 다섯 가족과 이들을 돕던 가족들이 함께 모여 서로의 어려움과 아픔을 나누고, 자녀들의 미래를 함께 고민하는 작은 모임으로 시작되었습니다.

모임이 성장하면서 장애인과 가족들이 겪는 언어와 정보의 장벽을 낮추고, 필요한 정보와 지원을 보다 체계적으로 제공할 수 있는 단체의 필요성이 커졌습니다. 이에 1993년 한미장애인협회(Korean American Disabled People’s Association, KADPA)라는 이름으로 비영리단체로 정식 설립되었습니다.

이후 Virginia 지역에도 한인 장애인과 가족들이 점차 늘어나면서 지역사회에 보다 가까운 지원과 프로그램을 제공할 수 있는 별도의 단체가 필요하게 되었습니다. 이에 2011년 Virginia 지역이 독립하여 VA KADPA를 설립하고, Virginia의 한인 장애인과 가족들을 위한 활동을 본격적으로 시작하였습니다.

VA KADPA는 독립된 단체로 활동하고 있지만, 그 뿌리와 오랜 인연을 함께해 온 Maryland KADPA와도 지속적으로 교류하며 다양한 행사와 활동을 함께하고 있습니다.

오늘날 VA KADPA는 Virginia에 거주하는 발달장애 및 지적장애가 있는 개인과 그 가족들이 지역사회 안에서 함께 성장하고 참여할 수 있도록 다양한 프로그램과 지원 활동을 이어가고 있습니다.

스포츠와 레크리에이션 활동을 비롯하여 가족 행사, 세미나와 교육 프로그램, 정보 및 지역사회 자원 안내, 문화·여가 활동 등 다양한 기회를 제공하며, 장애인과 가족들이 서로 연결되고 필요한 정보를 나누며 함께할 수 있는 따뜻하고 포용적인 커뮤니티를 만들어가고 있습니다.

The Korean American Disabled People’s Association (KADPA) began in 1991 in the Baltimore, Maryland area, when five families of children with disabilities and several supporting families came together as a small community to share their challenges, support one another, and discuss their children’s futures.

As the community grew, so did the need for an organization that could help Korean American individuals with disabilities and their families overcome language and information barriers and connect with helpful services and resources. In 1993, the Korean American Disabled People’s Association (KADPA) was formally established as a nonprofit organization.

Over time, the Korean American disability community in Virginia continued to grow, creating a need for a locally based organization that could provide programs, information, and support closer to families in Virginia. In 2011, the Virginia community established VA KADPA as an independent organization dedicated to serving Korean American individuals with disabilities and their families throughout Virginia.

Although VA KADPA operates as an independent organization, we continue to maintain a meaningful relationship with Maryland KADPA, sharing our common roots and participating together in various programs, events, and community activities.

Today, VA KADPA provides a variety of opportunities and resources to support individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities and their families living in Virginia.

Through sports and recreational activities, family events, educational seminars, community resource information, cultural and leisure activities, and other programs, we strive to help individuals and families connect with one another, access helpful information, participate in their community, and build meaningful relationships.

Together, we are building a caring and inclusive Korean American community where individuals with disabilities and their families can participate, connect, and belong.
