버지니아에서 제주까지, 꿈을 향한 새로운 도전
제3회 텍사스 전미주 장애인체전 수영 1위 헨리 군,
제 46 회 제주 전국 장애인 체육대회에서 새로운 경험 이어가

2026년 6월 텍사스에서 열린 전미주 장애인체전에서 버지니아 대표로 출전한 헨리 군은 수영 종목에서 1위를 차지하며 좋은 성적을 거두었습니다. 이후 한국 제주도에서 열린 제46회 전국장애인체육대회에 참가하며 또 하나의 특별한 도전을 이어갔습니다.
이번 대회는 주로 성인 선수들이 참가하는 무대로, 헨리 군은 참가 선수 가운데 최연소 선수로 함께했습니다. 아직 정식 출전 연령 조건에 해당하지 않아 번외 선수로 참가했으며, 이번 대회에서는 성적으로 이어지지는 않았지만 결과보다 더 값진 경험을 얻을 수 있었습니다. 어린 나이에 경험 많은 성인 선수들과 같은 무대에서 경기를 치르고, 더 큰 대회의 분위기를 직접 경험했다는 것 자체가 헨리 군에게는 의미 있는 배움과 성장의 기회가 되었습니다.
이번 대회에는 한국 각 지역의 장애인 선수들뿐 아니라 미국에서 참가한 선수들도 함께해 다양한 종목에서 그동안 갈고닦은 실력을 펼쳤습니다. 각자의 장애와 어려움 속에서도 자신의 목표를 향해 끊임없이 연습하고 도전하는 선수들의 모습은 함께한 선수와 가족들에게도 큰 감동과 용기를 전해 주었습니다.
헨리 군과 가족은 이번 제주 대회에서의 사진과 이야기를 VA KADPA 가족들과 함께 나누며 대회의 현장과 참가 경험을 소개했습니다. 특히 앞으로 전미주 장애인체전에서 좋은 성적을 거두고 더 큰 무대에 도전하게 될 버지니아의 미래 선수들과 가족들에게 이번 경험이 작은 도움이 되기를 바라는 마음으로 참가 과정과 경험을 함께 나누었습니다.
제주에서 선수들을 응원하기 위해 함께한 가족들에게도 이번 대회는 특별한 시간이었습니다. 지역과 국경을 넘어 만난 다른 선수 가족들과 서로의 경험을 나누고 함께 응원하며 새로운 인연을 만들 수 있었습니다. 경기의 결과를 넘어 선수와 가족들이 서로 연결되고, 새로운 가능성과 꿈을 발견할 수 있었던 소중한 시간이었습니다.
무엇보다 이번 경험을 통해 더 큰 무대에서 자신의 목표를 향해 열심히 도전하는 많은 장애인 선수들의 모습을 직접 보며 “우리도 더욱 힘을 내어 다음 목표를 향해 나아가자”는 새로운 동기와 용기를 얻었다고 전했습니다.
VA KADPA는 헨리 군의 값진 경험과 새로운 도전을 축하하며, 앞으로 전미주 장애인체전과 더 큰 무대에서 자신의 꿈을 펼쳐 나갈 버지니아의 모든 선수들을 함께 응원합니다.

From Virginia to Jeju: A New Journey Toward a Bigger Dream
After Taking First Place in Swimming at the Texas Games, Henry Gains Valuable Experience at Korea’s National Para Games
In June 2026, Henry represented Virginia at the National Games for Korean American Athletes with Disabilities in Texas, where he earned first place in swimming. Following that achievement, he had another special opportunity to compete at the 46th National Para Games in Jeju, South Korea, continuing his journey on an even larger stage.
The National Para Games primarily bring together adult athletes, and Henry was the youngest athlete participating in the event. Because he had not yet reached the age required for regular competition, he participated as an exhibition athlete. Although this competition did not result in a placing for Henry, the experience itself was far more important than the result. Having the opportunity at such a young age to compete alongside experienced adult athletes and experience a major national sporting event firsthand became a meaningful opportunity for learning and growth.
The event brought together athletes with disabilities from across Korea, as well as athletes participating from the United States. Across many different sports, athletes demonstrated the skills they had developed through countless hours of practice. Their determination to overcome challenges, pursue their goals, and continue pushing themselves forward was deeply inspiring to both athletes and their families.
Henry and his family shared photos and stories from Jeju with the VA KADPA community, giving other families a glimpse into the experience of participating in such a major disability sporting event. By sharing what they learned along the way, they hope their experience can be helpful to future Virginia athletes and families who may one day achieve strong results at the U.S. games and have opportunities to challenge themselves on an even bigger stage.
The experience was equally meaningful for the families who traveled to Jeju to support the athletes. Families from different regions and countries had opportunities to meet, encourage one another, exchange experiences, and form new connections. Beyond competition and results, the event became a special opportunity for athletes and families to connect with one another and discover new possibilities and dreams.
Most importantly, seeing so many athletes with disabilities working hard and pursuing their goals on a larger stage gave Henry and his family renewed motivation and courage to say, “Let’s keep working hard and continue moving toward our next goal.”
VA KADPA congratulates Henry on this valuable experience and new challenge, and proudly cheers for all Virginia athletes as they continue to grow, challenge themselves, and pursue their dreams on even bigger stages.
