특히 이번 세미나는 단순히 IEP 제도를 설명하는 데 그치지 않고, 실제 학교생활과 IEP 과정에서 부모님들이 경험하고 있는 고민과 질문을 함께 나누는 시간이 되었습니다. 부모님들은 IEP 미팅을 준비할 때 확인해야 할 사항, 자녀에게 필요한 지원과 서비스를 학교에 어떻게 요청하고 논의할 수 있는지 등 평소 궁금했던 내용을 질문했고, 두 강사는 실제적인 정보와 조언을 나누었습니다.

이번 세미나를 통해 부모가 IEP 팀의 중요한 구성원이며, 자녀의 강점과 필요를 가장 잘 알고 있는 사람으로서 적극적으로 의견을 나누고 질문하는 것이 중요하다는 점을 다시 한번 확인할 수 있었습니다.

VA KADPA는 앞으로도 장애 자녀를 둔 부모님들이 학교와 지역사회에서 필요한 정보를 보다 쉽게 이해하고 활용할 수 있도록 특수교육, IEP 및 지역사회 자원에 관한 유용한 정보를 지속적으로 공유해 나가겠습니다.

How Can We Better Prepare for an IEP Meeting?

VA KADPA Hosts Special Education and IEP Seminar

On September 23, VA KADPA hosted an online seminar for parents of children with disabilities focusing on special education and the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process.

During the seminar, Margaret Gerry, Ph.D., of Towson University, provided an overview of the IEP process, the important role parents play as members of the IEP team, effective ways to communicate and collaborate with schools, and how families can advocate for the educational supports and related services their children need.

Jihyae Choe, M.A., of George Mason University, provided Korean interpretation, helping parents better understand the information presented and participate more comfortably in the discussion.

More than simply an introduction to the IEP process, the seminar provided an opportunity for parents to share questions and concerns based on their own experiences with schools and IEP meetings. Parents asked practical questions about how to prepare for an IEP meeting, what to review beforehand, and how to communicate with the school about appropriate supports and services for their children. The presenters offered helpful information and practical guidance in response.

The seminar also highlighted an important message: parents are essential members of the IEP team. By sharing their child’s strengths, needs, and experiences, asking questions, and actively participating in discussions, parents can play an important role in developing an educational plan that appropriately supports their child.

VA KADPA will continue to provide helpful information and resources on special education, IEPs, and community services so that families of children with disabilities can better understand and access the supports available to them.
